When to Repair vs. When to Call: A Central NJ Homeowner's Guide to Furnace Trouble Signs

Quick answer: Six warning signs Central NJ homeowners should not ignore before heating season starts — short-cycling, cold air from the vents, unusual smells, yellow pilot flames, banging or screeching sounds, and a jump in the gas bill. This guide explains what each sign usually means and when to pick up the phone.

Every fall, the first cold night in Howell brings the same phone call: "My furnace is making a noise it wasn't making in April." Sometimes it's nothing. Sometimes it's the difference between a 45-minute repair and a very cold weekend.

This is the guide we wish every homeowner in Monmouth, Ocean, Middlesex, Mercer, and Burlington County had before heating season starts. Six signs to watch for, what they usually mean, and when to pick up the phone.

1. Short cycling (turning on and off every few minutes)

If your furnace is firing up, running for two or three minutes, shutting off, then starting again — that's called short cycling. It's not just annoying; it burns through parts fast and drives your gas bill up.

Common causes: dirty flame sensor, oversized furnace, thermostat placed in a drafty spot, or a clogged filter.

Call us if: it's been happening for more than a day, or you've already changed the filter and it hasn't stopped. (We wrote a full diagnostic guide on why furnaces short-cycle.)

2. The blower runs but no heat comes out

Cold air from a "heating" system usually points to a pilot/ignition issue, a tripped high-limit switch, or a gas supply problem.

Try first: check that your thermostat is set to HEAT (not just AUTO fan). Check that your gas is on.

Call us if: thermostat and gas both check out. This isn't a wait-and-see situation once temperatures drop.

3. Strange smells on first startup

A dusty, slightly burnt smell for the first 10–15 minutes of the season is normal — that's dust burning off the heat exchanger. What's not normal:

  • Rotten egg / sulfur smell → shut it off and call your gas company first, then us.
  • Persistent burning plastic or electrical smell → shut off at the thermostat and call us.
  • Musty smell that won't go away → could be a moisture problem in the ductwork or a mold issue on the coil.

4. Yellow or flickering pilot flame (older systems)

A healthy gas flame is steady and blue. Yellow, orange, or flickering flames can indicate incomplete combustion — which means carbon monoxide risk. This is a same-day call. And if you don't have a CO detector on every level of your home, please put that on this weekend's list.

5. Banging, screeching, or rumbling

  • Banging on startup: often delayed ignition — gas is building up before it lights. Diagnostic-worthy.
  • Screeching or squealing: blower motor bearing or belt issue.
  • Low rumble that lingers after shutdown: could be a dirty burner. Not always urgent, but shouldn't be ignored.

6. Your gas bill jumped and nothing else changed

If your usage looks normal but your furnace is running noticeably more to hit the same thermostat setting, efficiency is dropping somewhere. That's usually a tune-up conversation, not an emergency — but the earlier we catch it, the cheaper the fix.

What a Thermal Touch diagnostic actually looks like

Our diagnostic call is $125 ($50 diagnostic + $75 dispatch) — same price no matter where you are in our five counties. Joe (NATE-certified) pulls into your driveway, walks the system with you, tells you exactly what's going on in plain English, and gives you a written price before any repair work starts. Here's the good part: if Joe can do the repair the same day and you approve it, we drop the $125 entirely — you only pay the quoted repair. Return visits (parts on order) include a $75 return-visit fee and a 20% deposit. No pressure. No upsell games.

If it turns out to be something we can walk you through over the phone? Cassandra will do that for free. That's happened more than once.
